Anna has joined Gill Research & Development for a summer research placement between her second and third year the University of Hertfordshire, where she study’s Astrophysics. In September, Anna will complete continue to complete the final year of her degree.
Why did you choose to do a summer placement?
I wanted to gain the experience of doing engineering in a test environment as well as a design and research environment, which is the experience I have had up to now.
Tell us about the projects you have been working on while you have been at Gill.
I have been doing testing on liquid level sensors and also working on testing a prototype sensor which can detect the age and degradation of oil. I have also been testing the first prototype of a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance sensor. It has been exciting working with new technology products and testing the proof of concept.
What have you learnt?
I have discovered that I like the practical side of engineering as much as the design/theoretical aspects. Additionally, I have experienced a working environment which is considerably different from a university environment.
What have been the biggest benefits to you?
Being able to acquire experience in a company and industry that is relevant to physics.
Would you recommend doing a placement at Gill?
Yes, definitely. The diversity of work available and the opportunity to be involved in all of it is really valuable.
Best- Being able to solve a customer specific problem with a mass air flow sensor.
What do you want to do after university?
After I finish at University, I plan to do a Masters in Space Science Engineering, which can take between one or two years depending on where I study.
