A global manufacturer of heavy plant machinery required an extremely robust oil level sensor to measure the level of lubricant in the gearbox of underground mining plant equipment
In response to the demand for intrinsically safe instrumentation, Gill R&D were tasked with taking sister company Gill Instruments' WindObserver ultrasonic anemometer and designing it to meet IS approval requirements.
Using the existing WindObserver model as a base, Gill Engineers worked closely with certification body SIRA to adapt the design to intrinsic safety requirements and then enter the process of preparing all the documentation required to achieve certification.
The approved product, the WindObserver IS, was developed specifically to service the offshore market, thereby eliminating the expensive annual maintenance that the mechanical anemometers required.
With ATEX and IECEx certifications, the solid-state, ultrasonic anemometers provide the long-term reliability and measurement precision that was previously unavailable from offshore cup and vane equipment.
Utilising manufacturing capability certified to IS standards, Gill was able to take the product right through the design, certification and manufacturing cycle. This end-to-end capability provides customers with a full service offering, able to deliver IS certified products backed by extensive knowledge and experience.
The WindObserver IS now provides the offshore market, amongst others, with critical measurement data required by offshore challenges. The WindObserver has been installed on drilling vessels including the Chikyu and global offshore oil rigs.
